Farmers' Market

The Farmers' Market was a HUGE success! We had so much fun creating our products, selling them, and buying some! :) Thank you for coming and supporting our first and second grade classes!

We owe a great deal of our success to the amazing volunteers who helped by donating materials, prepping materials, and/or helping us in the classroom! THANK YOU SO MUCH for your help and generosity!

Our Tic Tac Toe boards/bags were very popular and our decorative rocks were in high demand. People were lining up as they waited for us to put out the next bunch!

It was fun seeing our booth all put together! Our signs were very helpful and eye-catching!

What a busy night! These sellers were collecting money, making change, and encouraging people to buy their amazing products.

We had so much fun working with Mrs. Mandigo's class on this project! Together, we raised $82.72 from our tic tac toe boards and decorative rocks! We'll be donating the money to the Waterbury Food Shelf.

Thank you again for helping us make this such an amazing and memorable experience!

Read to Someone

We are Reading to Someone as a Daily 5 choice. We have important jobs as we read to practice comprehension, fluency, and accuracy. We've learned how to help each other or give time for thinking, check for understanding while we read and listen to other's books, and how to share the love of reading with a partner. Ask your reader what his/her favorite part of Read to Someone is.

Taste - Make - Taste

Dana visited us again! This time, we did some taste testing! We tasted yogurt, goats' milk, feta cheese, and chèvre. Everyone liked the feta and some people really loved the goats' milk!

We also made cheese! We took turns stirring and heating the milk and vinegar. We had to get it all to the right temperature...

Then we got the cheese cloth and colander ready. We poured the curds and whey into the cheese cloth and squeezed out the whey (liquid part).

Then we got to taste our delicious cheese! Yum! :)

Farmer's Market!

Hello Families!

The first and second graders are hosting a farmer’s market on Thursday, November 6th at 6:00 pm in the gym.

Our classes will be working together to create a product to sell at the farmer’s market.

Although we will have some materials, we are asking for donations to help with our production.

• Small stones (about 1” diameter)
• Solid colored fabric (for example: canvas, denim, etc)
• Puff Paint

We could also use volunteers to help us prep our materials and assemble our products! Please let us know if you would be interested in participating.

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?

We read How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin to get us thinking about pumpkins before our field trip to Grenier's.

In the book, the characters learn some pumpkin facts and count the seeds in a pumpkin.

Of course, we had to try this too. So we cut into a pumpkin and estimated the number of seeds in it. Our estimations ranged from 100 to 300. 

After we estimated, everyone joined a "Twos Club," "Tens Club," or "Fives Club" and got to work cleaning seeds and counting by 2s, 10s, and 5s!

Each "club" had to count together to determine the total number of seeds they had.

After counting, each club reported out their number of seeds. We changed our estimations to 400-500.

Then we got to work adding up these huge numbers! We decomposed the numbers into their hundreds, tens, and ones (expanded notation!) We added the 100s together, then the 10s, then the 1s. We ended up with 587 seeds total!

If that isn't cool enough, one of our mathematicians stated that we only needed 13 more to get to 600. Several students agreed and proved that the statement was true with more equations!

Grenier's Farm Stand!

We visited Grenier's Farm Stand on Friday!

We got to see Mr. Grenier use his plow to dig up potatoes! Then we got to help pick them out of the dirt.

We walked from the lower field (with the potatoes) to the stand.

When we got to the stand, we went through a corn maze! We even ate some delicious cookies and apple cider. Yum!

After our chores, maze running, and snack, we got to pick out our pumpkins!
