Math Has Begun!

We began math this week! We use the Investigations Math Program to build our math skills. Check out our Math Curriculum section of the blog for more information about Investigations Units and the Math Practice section for information about our current units!

The math games we played this week are: Collect 20 Together, Staircases, Start With/Get To, and Mystery Bags.

Start With/Get To is a class game we play that involves counting and using a number line. We choose a "Start With" number (1-30) and a "Get To" number (2-30). Then we count on the number line from our "Start With" number to the "Get To" number.

Mathematicians played Collect 20 (see the Math Games section for directions).
We built staircases by using cubes to build and notice patterns between numbers.
We started exploring with Mystery Bags. We counted the objects in a bag, recorded our math thinking, and double checked our results.

We had a lot of fun exploring with math materials and playing math games. Ask your child what his/her favorite math choice was this week!

First Week of First Grade

Wow, our first week of first grade was busy, fun, and exciting! Here are some bits from our three days...
Every morning we sign in, read and respond to the Morning Message, take down our chairs, and have choice time. Children can play with materials in the room or go to Mileage Club (Mileage Club begins on Tuesday!)
We uncovered a few materials this week including: Geoblocks, Pattern Blocks, Connecting Cubes, and Base 10 Blocks. Children shared creative ways to use the materials as well as how to take care of them.
We had our first All School Share as First Graders! Thatcher was there and so were our new principals and Ms. Goodnow's dog, Cooper!

On Friday, we reflected on our first week of first grade. We read My Brave Year of Firsts, by Jamie Lee Curtis and after revealing the colored pencils, we drew our favorite memories from our first week of first grade. Here is some of our work:
We had an adventurous first week of school! By Friday this was the response on the Morning Message:
Tomorrow we will start our first four day week, so remember to get plenty of rest! :)
See you all soon for more learning, fun, and exploration!

Scholastic Book Orders

We read so much this week - first graders LOVE books!

Every month, your child will bring home a few Scholastic Book Orders. Ordering books is a great way to expand your library at home, as well as encourage your child to continue to be excited about reading! When you order books from Scholastic and use our class activation code (HZ3MF), you help us earn rewards! Those rewards accumulate so we can add more books to our class book nook!

Scholastic Book Orders went home today and are due on Friday, September 13th! Click here for directions on how to order online or click here to go right to the Scholastic Reading Club website. Ordering online has many benefits, however, you can still order using the catalogs.

Nut Free Please!

This year we will be in a peanut/tree nut free classroom. Please send your child with non-homemade, peanut-free snacks. Any snack brought to school should have a label that I can check! If you have a big bag of something at home that you want to put in a small bag for snack, please bring in the label once so I can confirm it's okay! If your child brings in a peanut/tree nut snack, they can eat it at lunch, but not in the classroom. :)

Any special treats for the whole class for special events or birthdays must be peanut-free, store-bought, and discussed with me prior to bringing them in.

I will upload the TBPS letter about our nut-free room onto our blog as soon as possible! It will also be sent home via mail or your child soon.

Please let the school nurse, Allison Conyers or me know if you have further questions.

As always, thanks for the support in keeping our classroom safe, happy, and healthy!

Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday! Miss Snyder

Thank You!

Wow, what an amazing class get-together! Almost all of our classmates were there with parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, and grandmothers too! Even our new principals, Ms. Goodnow and Mrs. Hudak, attended. It was great to see everyone there playing, chatting, and enjoying some goldfish. :)

-----------------------------------------

A big "THANK YOU" for all of the family support this week. I was happy to meet everyone at our conferences and see so many families at our get-together. I know summer is a busy season, but the kids had a great time seeing new and old friends and previewing our classroom.

We'll have many other opportunities to connect this year and I appreciate the participation and communication already! Our connections will make a huge difference in your child's school year.

Let's enjoy the last full week of summer and I'll see you all on the first day of school. :) Miss Snyder

Back-To-School Get Together!

Please stop by the Thatcher Brook playground between 4-6pm on Thursday, August 15th for our Back-To-School Get Together! There is no "big" presentation, just a time for kids to come and play, for parents to ask questions, get to know each other, and get to know me! See you there!
